Atta Girl Poster – 24th March 2012

Now that Atta Girl has become a collective I’m not solely responsible for the poster brief! I really like being set a challenge by someone else, so this one was set by Lauren “Two girls dancing”, a nice loose brief but I was worried about getting the detail in large enough as every single Atta Girl poster has only had one girl on it so far. It’s rather fitting to have more than one character on the poster now!

We also decided to have the Los Campesinos! lyrics on it (It’s you, it’s me, and there’s dancing!) as they have declared the night their official after party, hooray! The night will still be all Atta Girl tunes old and new but there might be a few more indiepop hits dotted about than normal. It’s been five months since we last got to DJ so there’s a lot of tracks of many genres to get played!

Anyway here’s to a new more colourful and populated Atta Girl poster phase:

I got pretty carried away with inking the hair. I love it when I have a good hair day (ink wise)… Here’s a close up of the “hairscape” (new terminology required!):

Dear Lara + a Steamy Stag

My commission for David Lan and his new band Dear Lara.

The brief:

“A stag on a cliff top or coming out of the woods. Then if I could have mountains in the distance and use smoke coming out the stags nostrils to spell out the band name in wispy smokey writing?”

And lo a stag came out of the woods and steam rose from its nostrils to spell “Dear Lara”, just long enough for me to sketch it.

There were a couple of versions made of this sketch but this was my personal favourite.

Shrag and Tunabunny’s End of Tour Poster

Another commission! And this time for a much loved, nay, favourite band of mine – SHRAG! We put them on at Atta Girl over a year ago, utterly fantastic. I first saw them at Indietracks on the outdoor stage. Amelia Fletcher was in the audience so I gave her an Atta Girl zine, seeing as the night was named after one of her songs.

Anyway, the poster, I kept redrawing the girl on the right and each time it became a little bit more like Helen from Shrag, it wasn’t intentional and it doesn’t quite look like her, but I did steal her fringe! I messed about with the colouring of this for ages too… That bow tie was pastel pink for ages, just looked too sickly, there’s something grittier about a dark red bow tie (but still firmly on the border of indiepopness). Very happy with the composition of this one, it was the first sketch idea I did and it just felt right.

A Christmas Commission

Hoorah Tiny Tide asked me to do their Christmas album cover this year. It represents the three tracks on their album. That of:

1. Vintage Angel (Song of Christmas Past)
2. Christmas Lima Bean (Song of Alternative Christmas Present)
3. Noel on The Moon (Song of Christmas Future)

I arranged the composition to resemble a christmas tree with the Lima Bean shining out as the Christmas tree star!

Happy alternative song of Christmas Present!

C J Lim

Well I’ve been thoroughly absorbed in studying my MArch and trying to earn enough pennies to survive. So fun and illustration have been lacking recently! Well, not fun as such. I went to this awesome mind opening lecture held at uni the other evening.

C J Lim presented work from his three lives. That of the real world, masterplans and architecutral commissions in his practice Studio 8. His speculative dream like work also within practice but a totally freeing way of expressing, and that of his love of food all wrapped up in the above!

His work “London in two and half dimensions” was wildly speculative absolutely lacking in practical function. But that was what I loved about it, it was the narrative and the method of expressing this. The two and half dimensions is best described by visualising a 2d architectural drawing, then popping up elements and messing with scale and focussing on the pure elements that make up the narrative.

I wanna make stuff like this! But without all the hours of cutting out the tiny tiny elements with blades and tweezers.

Atta Girl – “Ghouls Just Wanna Have Fun”

The next Atta Girl clubnight is on halloween Saturday 29th October.

So for this poster I went for a Day of The Dead theme as we were playing around with making song titles spookier! Replacing Girls Just Wanna Have Fun by Cyndi Lauper with Ghouls just felt like the perfect description for a halloween Atta Girl!

Plato’s Summer Stars

The lovely Mark Zonda from Italian band Tiny Tide contacted me recently to commission an album cover for his recent free album (ahead of his main album release). I really enjoyed drawing this! It was quite a tricky image to try and put to pen.

He wanted Puro Instinct, smoking bananas like they were cigars under a starry sky! I did my best:

Tiny Tide’s free summer album can be downloaded here.

If you’re after a new album cover and have some kind of hallucinatory image in mind (or a feet firmly on the ground image) feel free to contact me (clairegoldthorp [at]gmail [dot]com) for an exceedingly reasonable quote x

Bookish Brunette – Commission

Bookish Brunette (a.k.a Jen Evans) approached me to design her website header. She was after something hand drawn with inspiration from one of her favourite illustrators Liselotte Watkins.

Her brand new website is now live with my illustration at the top! Here is a screen grab and the work in progress:

Ace Bushy Strip…Tees

I mean Ace Bushy Striptease oh the puns!

Anyway, NEWSFLASH the design that ABS commissioned have now been printed by Get A Grip and you can buy them from Ace Bushy’s Shop. Or if you’re at Indietracks you can try them on and buy them. £5? A bargain! Help fund a lovely Birmingham band.

Here’s Simon from the band wearing one. You can even get them in lady shapes! (Un-related comment):
